Scientists and Graduate students working with the Centre of Alternative Wastewater Treatment (CAWT) have written four chapters of a recently published book titled Ecological Modelling and Engineering of Lakes and Wetlands.

The chapters involve CAWT research investigating the efficacy and efficiency of using natural tundra wetlands for the treatment of domestic wastewaters in Arctic Canada, and the development and validation of the SubWet 2.0 modelling program as a predictive tool to assist wastewater managers and regulators.

“Our work demonstrates that these cold climate wetlands can provide effective treatment and should be considered as part of a hybridized treatment strategy for small isolated communities within Arctic Canada,” said CAWT Research Scientist and co-author, Dr. Gordon Balch. “The chapters contribute significantly to our knowledge concerning the unique treatment needs of Arctic communities and how these passive treatment systems are well suited to the economic and geophysical challenges of this region, while addressing some of the management issues that have historically impeded the inclusion of these sites within a northern treatment strategy and regulatory framework.”

According to the publisher’s website, the book “presents the progress being made in modelling for a wealth of applications. It covers the older biogeochemical models still in use today, structurally dynamic models, 3D models, biophysical models, entire watershed models, and ecotoxicological models, as well as the expansion of modeling to the Arctic and Antarctic climate-zones.” Topics also covered include ecological engineering, environmental management, and climate change.
